Visually and historically, this place is stunning. The rock formations are unreal, and the cave churches with their frescoes are genuinely moving. Walking here feels like stepping straight into layered history. But for a UNESCO site, the condition is disappointing. Toilets are poor. Paths are slippery and unsafe, especially in winter. Basic visitor care feels neglected. More serious is the lack of conservation. Plaster is falling off in places, exposing damage. Some churches are poorly protected, with visible graffiti left by careless visitors. Information boards are faded and hard to read, so without a guide, much of the meaning is lost. An incredible site, badly managed. Göreme deserves far better care than it currently gets.
